ARS 13-404 Justification; self-defense
Self-defense is a common justification defense (often referred to in other states and media as “stand your ground”). It is essentially an admission that the charged offense was committed, but it was done with justification, making the conduct legal.
A person is justified in threatening or using force (physical or deadly, depending on the circumstances) when a reasonable person would believe such force was immediately necessary to protect yourself or another (ARS 13-406 Defense of a Third Person) against similar force.
People have a general idea in their head about what this means but are very specifics facts and circumstances under Arizona law that determine if this defense is viable. Was the threat against you imminent? Was the use of force proportionate and reasonable? Who started it? These are all variables that could be the difference between a successful justification defense or a conviction.
